Have you ever been at such an all time low that you considered killing yourself? About 5 years ago I was considering doing so. Although I have been blessed with a very accepting family of my same-sex attractions and love, there were still many harmful things being said around me and unfortunately it continues even today.
I remember at my Catholic high school where often people looked down upon being gay and for the first two years I was overall fine with being gay. I was just scared of how classmates would react to such a topic. Would I be bullied? Most likely.
It wasn't until my friends invited me to some church events from more fundamentalist churches when I began to ponder whether or not it would be fine to be in a relationship with another boy more often and seriously. I remember wondering that since my parents didn't go to church that often, that maybe those who did had a better idea about the topic. Thus creating an internal battle which eventually would lead to a dark period of my life in which suicide would seem viable.
I went to a few different churches with friends, all of which were fundamentalist. God had been a very huge part of my life prior to these church visits and I wondered if I could get closer to him by considering what other Christ followers had to say. I went to an Alliance church regularly in my early 20's and this church seemed to do the most harm to me as I became more committed to the infectious ideologies which they produced. It wasn't until I fell deeply in love with another male who attended the same church, that I began to realize that this passion in my body, mind and soul would never go away.
Even after "coming out" to my friends and family there was still a feeling of brokenness due to the harmful ideologies which infected my spirit. Which eventually caused me to no longer want Christianity in my life and I then dabbled into another religion in an unhealthy manner. Not being cautious enough to understand the dangers in dabbling in Witchcraft lead me so far away from God that I eventually had lost the sense of love that I had felt before for men. Promiscuity and drinking took it's toll and then there was this moment in my life that I was ready to end it all by jumping off of a bridge. However, through friends and other people, I started to remember that the last time I was happy was when I was a Christian.
My love for other men is such a huge part of me that without it, I am not myself. I have this longing that I feel the need to fulfill and the fact that there are still people today infecting people with these sinful ideologies, makes me realize that for a religion with a God who asks us to love... Then where is the empathy for people who have this love in their hearts and find it too much of a burden to give up on?
If these people really understood what it is like to be someone born with these passions and feel a calling to fulfill them in a loving manner, then this world could have a chance to beat homophobia. Don't deny you're calling of love! I just don't see why it would matter to God which body parts your soul mate was born with as long as it's a healthy relationship. If there are people who are called to lives of celibacy and are an exception to procreation, then why shouldn't loving same sex relationships have that very same exception?
Sometimes our passions are too strong to refuse and it really makes no sense to me why gays shouldn't be allowed to share passions with their soul mates. It's all about taking away the fear of probable sinning and replacing it with love. I don't know how many times I have to write it out for people and it doesn't get across their heads.
I'm a male Christian again, now with a boyfriend and life is so much better with him by my side. Nothing could ever make me give this up now because I see now that a life of love is much better than a life with fear.

Exploring More Options in Christian Ministry
This coming Friday I have a meeting with a professor who works in the Seminary. We will be discussing my interest in continuing my journey in ministry through the church. I also must mention that I am extremely thankful to my good friend and Anglican reverend, Emily Carr who has really paved the way for me in this beautiful spiritual path on which I finally am feeling the push forward into ministry work. About two years ago I never would have thought that this would happen, during which time I was attending an Alliance church which was extremely fundamentalist.
In the past I felt the call to attend this and other churches in such denominations as Baptist and Pentecostal who seemed to harbor the same beliefs on the subject of same-sex relationships which the Alliance church stood for. Which is that homosexuality in any situation is sinful and that if your passions remain too strong to be in a relationship with someone opposite gender as you, then you should remain celibate. Also, you may not be a leader in their churches if you so much as openly support same-sex relationships because your views could corrupt the congregations and cause division in the church.
The problem with this sort of politic in the church, is that it does not consider those gay people that are burning with passions so much that they cannot control themselves. I do believe that some gays are called to a life of celibacy, just like some hetero singles are. However we can't ignore those who are burning out of control with passion for expressions of love. Those who long for a companion in their body, mind and soul.
For gays like this, this sort of politic is in fact harmful. Probably not indirectly from these peoples' hearts, but internally for those who are confused due to this. They feel inside this strong and powerful loving nature. A natural longing which all humans feel but they fear the good inside of them and are sometimes so distraught and ashamed that suicide becomes an option for them.
For someone to intrude on one's personal life and denounce their calling in life which is possibly from Christ, is a very degrading and sinful act which does not follow Christ's golden rule. Which makes the civil rights movement so important today because as long as there is this shameful stance in congregations and gay children are being raised to believe that their love is sinful, then we have lots more work to do. When people like Wilna van Beek, a lesbian woman who denounces her longing to conform to the views of degenerate homophobic Christians, has these seminars which she claims as a message of love and receives standing ovations. My God, we have lots to do.
All that these ridiculous people are doing is sugar coating this silly movement which is a next generation movement brought on my their successors, who have feared gays for much too long and even told them that God hates them. It is about time to demolish this evil movement that man has made and continue to show gays that their love is not different nor shameful. They are beloved children of God and as long as they remain on the path to their calling in life, then they will be blessed. Even through the hardest times, they still are blessed with God's love regardless of what anybody tells them. They do not need to feel any blockage from God and they are allowed to grow in their faith... they just need to believe it!
Being apart of the civil rights movement for GSD (Gender and Sexual Diverse) Christians is what has brought the push and doors being opened to where I am today. I ask of you to pray for me as I see what my options are to start ministering within the church to not only GSD people but also to any person who is in need of ministering. I am ready dear God and am looking forward to this journey. I've known for a long time that this was a valued path in my heart and it brings me happiness and excitement to see if God will bless me with such a path.

The Elders are Floating on Our Water
Remain in the Lord's steadfast love; through his love we will fly,
for when we feel it kick in, we rise like a phoenix in a flame.
Do the best with what you have; because the world is a jungle,
Be thankful in the Lord, and count your blessings.
Question the Lord; for there are times we get lost in valleys,
Our Lord is our shelter, and he comforts us when we are faithful.
Do not fear judgement; those who judge you have poisoned hearts,
for each time you fear them, your voice may follow like a snakebite.
Do not argue with your elders; for they come from another time,
for each generation changes, and your actions are like shouts from the tallest mountain.
Do not fear your insights; for if no man has heard them, you will never be called wise.
As each man grows older, their world becomes a ship floating on your water.
The wicked will blame you; but never stop the Lord's calling of you,
for they take discomfort in change, and lack the wisdom he has taught you.
Follow the path the Lord has set for you; and fly like the flaming phoenix.
Whose flames will surely disintegrate the snakes who bite at your heart.

Reconciling My Grudge Against Women
When I was ten years old, my Father left home because my parents separated. I remember looking out the window of my mother's car on the way to my grandparents' condo and quietly crying after he left. I tried to hold back the tears as much as I could but I couldn't stop. My older sister said "Ryan, I know that you're crying." I knew there was no hiding it. "I know," I told her. I normally don't like to mention family issues to the public, so I'll try my best to keep it brief without too many details.
Shortly after my parents separated my father started seeing another woman which I saw as a threat. I hated her for causing my father to see me less and there was a lot of turmoil between us, especially when they moved in together. I saw less of him as I grew into my teen years because there were lots of emotions flying around with our family. Eventually my father remarried which I was not happy with. I remember making fun of my stepmother during the reception with my best friend. I was immature and wanted to put all of the blame on my stepmother. Today everything that happened back then is "water under the bridge" and I have found a more civil relationship with my father and stepmother.
What happened back then seems to have formed a grudge in my heart against women who become closer to a male friend of mine that has become dear to my heart. I have always valued male bonding time a lot, especially because I didn't get to have much of it during my early childhood. Things really started acting up when I started falling in love with male friends who started dating girls. But there was a difference between what happened between my stepmother and I and my crushes' girlfriends. I found it necessary to be nice to them in order to spend more time with these crushes of mine. I would think of ways of how to get closer to my friends than their girlfriends. But of course some of these guys were quite heterosexual.
I fell in love with a lot of straight guys because that was all I seemed to like at the time. Maybe it had to do with wanting to take a guy away from a woman rather than a woman taking a guy away from me, like with my stepmother. I do sometimes fantasize about having a masculine and attractive boyfriend to flaunt around and be like "In your face girls! He's mine!" ;) Probably not one of my healthiest reasons to want a man but I'm not afraid to admit it.
Recently, I realized that my grudge is still there at times. My friend, who will remain nameless, was sharing his relationship issues with me and after realizing how controlling his girlfriend is trying to be over him, I started to get very irritated. He started telling me about people she wouldn't let him see and he was quite upset by this. Then he brought up that she didn't like me and that if I were to ever come over to his place, then she should know so that she isn't there. I looked at him with disgust in my eyes and said "what a cunt!" No, I don't have a crush on this friend of mine, but he is a close friend who is dear to my heart.
This grudge is still here sometimes, but today I realize that I am able to call a lot of friends' girlfriends my friends. My best friend, the one who I had a crush one and we made fun of my stepmother together as immature boys. I'm totally cool with his fiance and they both are really excited about me being the best man at their wedding. I'm actually quite close with his fiance and we have a blast together. No grudge there whatsoever and I am striving to make things better between those women I may have harsh words for.
It just seems to be when a woman tries to mess with a bond that I have with a guy that I might get agitated with a little more fury due to my past experiences. I now realize that I could have handled things better when my friend was sharing with me, but I guess it's just something to remember for next time.

Gay Love is Hard to Find when You're a Christian
All through my life I have had crushes and want to be made feel special by a guy who would never leave me. Although I have never found a guy like that in a physical nature, there has always been one guy who always stayed with me and whom does make me feel special. God. My relationship with him has had it's struggles but we have always seemed to come back to each other.
When other gay guys see that I am a Christian and how strong my faith is, many of them automatically choose to judge me and they don't want anything to do with me. It reminds me of the Christian community in some ways. If I am not up to par with what they believe, then I am seen as degraded. Since I don't care how they see me in a way where nothing could change my mind, they judge me even further.
It saddens me to see that there are so many other gay guys who see me in such a way and it makes it more difficult to find someone besides God to make me feel special and never leave. Someone who I can fulfill my longings with. Someone who will love me for me and not hate on me just because I have certain beliefs. Most importantly I long for a guy who understands me and is willing to understand me regardless of any religious beliefs I may have. I don't feel that these are tall orders but just guidelines to maintain a healthy relationship.
I've been on many dates and still have not found the second thing in my life that I am truly passionate about, the first is God. I don't do well when I am alone as you may have read from a previous blog about my sex addiction. I would really love to have someone to come home to and cuddle with. Someone who would ask me how my day was and really listen but it seems to be a really hard thing to find in my position on this earth.
I'm a friend to many and I scream positiveness. I'm one of the good guys but I fall short on the scale a lot when people see my religiousness. I'm sure many Christians judge me as disconnected from Christ, but as you can see I usually am disconnected from expressing love intimately with another guy. My beliefs are what holds me back in life a lot but I'm not about to give up on them since they're the only things that has keep a good head on my shoulders.
You don't have to be a Christian to be my boyfriend, in fact my last boyfriend was agnostic and we stayed together for nearly a year. We respected each other's beliefs and never looked down at each other when we talked about our beliefs. Because it seemed to be more important to us to stay positive and be there for each other.
I live in hope and prayer that God will send me that guy I've been waiting for all of my life. I wont give up and will continue to go on dates, hoping that someone sticks. I'm sure many would agree that I deserve to be happy, so next time think twice before treating a Christian gay like garbage. He just might be your Angel. ;)

I'm a Christian Who Listens to "Satanic" Music
Marilyn Manson, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Bad Religion and Tool are just some of the bands that I listen to on an average work day. That's right, I'm a rocker and I like my beats giving me a hard rhythm throughout my day. Oh, and God forbid I also love the lyrics! I must be very far from God's path since I support artists like these, right?
Let me ask all of those who stay away from music like this because they believe the music produced is sinful to listen to a question. Why do you think it's sinful to hear an artists opinions? It seems to me that many churches today accept situations when their members are expressing themselves and venting to their fellow Christians, even if they don't completely agree with what they have to say. I think that it's pretty healthy the vent out all of your emotions and thoughts and especially support those people who are in need of being listened to.
"But this music will corrupt our children!" That's a famous line that I hear a lot in the Christian community. But my opinion on the matter is that if kids are attracted to this music and expressing themselves through it, then we shouldn't throw their music in the trash. Sit down and listen to the music with them, read the lyrics if you don't understand what they're saying. Avoid comments like "This is garbage" or "It's Satanic" because this will only show them that their parents aren't willing to understand them.
We shouldn't judge the artists either. Every artist has their reasons why they write certain lyrics or participate in certain songs. Do some research on these artists and find out why they make the music they do. Listen to what they say in their songs and find out why they vent certain emotions because to many artists making music is therapeutic. Just because you know someone who listens to a guy like Marilyn Manson doesn't mean they're taking every verse to heart. There are probably just some similarities between the listener and the artist.
I love hearing any person speak their mind and being immensely real about what they feel inside. I may not agree with everything that the person says but I strive to understand individuals whomever they may be. I like to hear about their upbringing and all of the things that happened who made them who they are today. When these individuals have crazy musical talent, it just makes it that much easier and entertaining to hear what they have to say. I believe that in order to be a disciple of Christ, we really need to listen as much as we spout off our beliefs. Otherwise, we're just being disrespectful and arrogant to the artists and even the listeners.
I can say that personally, listening to these artists has made me a better person and even a little wiser. My beliefs in Christ are stronger than ever now that I view these people under a more humane view and people are willing to hear my stories about how Christ impacted my life over the years. Because I am also open to hearing why people have different beliefs than me. I respect people and am against manipulation. I have lost some respect for those who have underlying agendas to "save" people based on their situations. That seems ridiculous to me because the way I see it that God puts people in your life because he wants you to listen to them and share with them.
It's not about what you do to their hearts, it's what God does to their hearts. There's nothing wrong with hoping they take a leap of faith for Christ but we need to be respectful to peoples' lives. That also means not digging for information just to find ways to support your theories. Then all that you are being is a user and that's one of the worst ways you could treat somebody. Show genuine interest in who they are and don't be afraid to show them who you are. Don't "ease" them into the God talk either. It's better to be upfront about who you are because it's a lot more respectful.
Ephesians 4:29-32 ESV
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

They have the right to express themselves, it is okay to like them and listen to what they have to say. It's okay to appreciate their talents that they have and to hear them out. Listen with a sincere heart rather than a defensive heart and their willingness to listen will provide them with a better understanding of Christianity. Maybe God will touch their hearts through you or maybe he wont. Either way, just be a caring friend and appreciate people for who they are and the walk of life they are on.

A Friend Lost to the Sin of Homophobia
I have many friends in my life and although most of them support my movement in the GSD (Gender and Sexual Diversity) community, I sometimes am surprised with what I hear from certain individuals' mouths. I still today hear some comments that are rooted in hate like "fag" or "that's gay". Normally it doesn't bother too much when I hear people say these things because it is pretty rare that I hear someone using these comments in a way that is used against gays. However, I recognize that it doesn't make what they say right and I also wonder if maybe I should be speaking up at times.
This week something bothered me immensely and it was not because someone made a comment like "that's gay". I don't want to reveal this person publicly and slander his name so let's call him Peter as an alias.
I had recently invited Peter to a concert I would be performing in for the Bridge City Chorus, a GSD friendly choir. It had been a while since I had seen him, probably over a year. I had met him through a homophobic Alliance church I had attended for many years but stopped going after I started to be more open about my sexuality. Leaders in the church were trying to persuade me away from "living a life of sin" but I have fond memories of Peter being quite respectful of my beliefs on sexuality and religion.
Peter text messaged me on my cell phone Tuesday asking if I was able to meet up and of course I agreed to. Later that evening he comes and knocks on my door and we go for a rather short and abrupt walk. He tells me that he would not be attending the concert firstly and I instantly realize from the tone of his voice that it is because of the GSD themed nature our choir. I respond with a simple "okay.." and leave it at that. I ask him how he is doing and how his church is going. "good" he says and asks me how am I doing and what I have been up to. I tell him that I am doing great and there is lots of news in my life.
He goes quiet for a bit and I know what's on his mind. I could tell that he was upset with my recent media appearances and the GSD friendly Christian movement which I had brought to light through my own personal stories.
Here's an interview I did with CTV:
We begin walking downhill towards the Rotary Park by the old Victoria Bridge and that's when he begins speaking what has been on his mind. He calls himself a coward for not being firm on "The Word", I reply "okay..?" with a tone of curiosity in where this conversation was going, even though I already knew. He tells me that for me to say that God being in my "sin" is blasphemy. A very different approach from him that I was used to.
I was surprised at him that he would intrude on my life after not seeing me for a year and only see me because he had contrary beliefs on the subject. However he listened to my responses which were from what God had pressed onto my heart over the years. I tell him a brief account of what I went through in the past due to thinking of my inner-longings as sinful.
I tell him about growing up in a non-practicing Catholic home who accepted gays but somehow I still worried that people in church had a better idea of the matter. I mention what it was like for me when I started to get more serious about church as I was attending his Alliance church. How I prayed even harder for God to take my longings away and was even at the point of having a girlfriend. But falling in love with a boy at the church rocked my world after my relationship ended with my girlfriend and this boy stopped seeing me due to drug addiction. This gave me a need to reflect. I mentioned how believing that these longings for love were sinful and my extreme wanting to express them killed me inside. I think to myself how a person would want me to go back to that and wonder if they even realize how cruel and hurtful they are being.
A friend is a person whom one knows and with whom one has a bond of mutual affection. For someone to intrude on one's life and tell them that all of the supporting and healing we take part in is wrong. That can unfortunately diminish affection we have towards someone. Homophobic values kill friendships but it doesn't mean that we should hate them. Yes their values are pitiful and harmful but we also need to understand that they are victims of brainwashing due to the fear of a love they don't fully understand. Forgive them... However if you find that your relationships with people like this are becoming too harmful for you, you do not have to continue seeing them.
After I unload my story onto Peter, he starts to debate things in a biblical sense which I then tell him that I would not take part in. We begin to walk back where we came from. In my life I have discovered that debating in such a manner can be pointless since people often twist the Holy Bible around in a way that suits their own needs. Thus we have homophobic people in the church who have convinced themselves that their behavior is perfectly acceptable in Christ's eyes. But really, people could say the same thing about Christian gays... So we have to look at the common sense of humanity. Which behavior is harming people and which behavior is about love which Christ is all about? In which case homophobia would be the sin and not a natural, healthy longing of love.
As our walk is coming to an end I mention one last thing which is The Golden Rule. "Treat others as you would like to be treated", a valuable biblical teaching brought up many times throughout my life. I mention that for someone to intrude on someone's personal life and disrespect them by telling them it's wrong is extremely disrespectful and goes against The Golden Rule. By this time he had given up on trying to persuade me from the work I have been doing in the community and as we finally reach my apartment, I am wondering if he is going to say a homophobic prayer over me. Instead he shakes my hand and we say our goodbyes.
What hurt the most about our visit, was that he only wanted to discuss the gay topic... He didn't want to sit down and hear what I had been up to over the last year. The fact that when I told him that I wouldn't debate with him and he turns around and starts walking back to his car. It shows me that he didn't really care to sit down and hear how I was doing. He already judged for himself how I was doing due to the media appearances and possibly social networking.
I hope and pray that the Holy Spirit would rock his world and show him how the words that are coming from his mouth are not doing anyone any good. At one point of our conversation he even scapegoated Jesus by saying the classic saying "It's not me, it's God". Just another way for many homophobic Christians to attempt to weasel out of their actions and somehow feel better about their fear of a love they do not understand. But through our love and our stories we hope that people will reconsider what they have been taught. I've experienced a few encounters of changed hearts already which shows me that we are making a difference in peoples lives. :)

Christian Gay Recovering From Sex Addiction
As I have been becoming a well respected person in the Saskatoon community, I have been trying to find a way to let people know that I don't think that I am a superior person in regards to faith. I have my own battles that I deal with and I would like to share one of those with you. The darkest part of my heart is the pure lust I have shared and used to take advantage of others over the years. Although I am telling you this as I am a far less promiscuous person than I have been and probably wouldn't have shared this a year ago. I want you all to know that I am far from being even close to complete righteousness. I must also warn you that this blog is not intended for children's eyes because of the sexual themes that lie within.
When I was a child, I feared that my parents would find out what I would do with the other neighborhood boys. I remember multiple times when I would ask my friends to expose themselves to me starting when I was around the age of 10. When they showed me, it excited me and I was realizing these special feelings I had for other boys in my body, mind and soul. It would start with some male bonding and once we trusted each other enough I would ask. I lusted after the other boys, my heart would beat rapidly and I felt sensational pleasure. I was never caught as I payed close attention to the foot steps above my basement.
Being gay wasn't really heard of at my age and it was before people started insulting people by saying "that's gay". I was mostly sheltered from a lot of gay hate speech like "fag" and didn't hear the word until boys started saying it at school. "What's a fag?" I most likely asked a classmate. "Oh, that's a boy who likes seeing boys naked." I remember thinking of it as a perversion since my fellow classmates would use it as an insult. No body wanted to be that different or be called a "pervert".
I would never dare to ask a classmate to expose themselves to me because I realized I would be called a "fag" or looked at as perverted. So I would explore the normal sexuality with the other boys. We found magazines in parks of lingerie models and the occasional pornographic magazine. Most of the other boys were interested but there were the few that said "that's gross". I wondered if the boys who thought it was gross, were like me but I would be too afraid to ask and I would try to appear interested in the female models.
As I grew closer to my teen years, I became interested in girlfriends... but not in the way most boys did. I wanted a girlfriend mostly because every other boy did and it seemed to make boys feel better than others. I wanted to be better than my classmates but often failed at the attempt. Girls could recognize that I was different than most boys. Although some girls may have been curious to be be my girlfriend, they seemed to want what the other girls wanted, one of the normal boys.
I felt like I was a loser and that nobody liked me. I felt like this passion I had for the other boys burned within me so much that I was left to act out in personal ways. I wrote journals about the boys I liked, I'd watch other boys on movies and tv shows and hope someone would show some skin and finally I would touch myself even though I was not completely sure how to masturbate at first. The first time I did it, was with a friends hand sleeping next to me and it was extremely messy needless to say. I grabbed lots of toilet paper and cleaned up the mess but after a while tried it again. I was very thankful my friend didn't wake up. I was still a preteen.
I masturbated LOTS in my teen years. I would always think about how nice it would be to have a boy take his clothes off and let me touch his entire body. I visioned it in my mind constantly and when I got to see my friends shirtless, I would remember that image and just go nuts later in my room. It's literally the best addiction to have because of the climax and the fact you never have to pay for it. You can always find some crazy way to get you off even if you didn't pay for porn.
I fell in love with some of these boys of course but there still was that constant fear of what others would think if I told anyone. Even if I was really sure that a friend was gay, I still wouldn't because I feared that people would look at me differently and I didn't want to be like that. I would constantly try to prove myself as "one of the guys" simply because I wanted to be around them and I felt passionate love and sexual tension for some of these boys. But they still saw me as different and eventually would not want to see me outside of school. This was what the first two years of high school was like for me.
However a younger friend of mine, Evan who I felt an extreme love and attraction for came to the same high school as me when I was in grade eleven. We spent lots of time together and we made each other feel well loved and special. But he was straight and I found that out when I told him "I like guys" and asked if he would "try stuff with me." He looked completely weirded out and worried so I laughed it off and told him it was a prank I was playing on him.
I'm not even sure how it came about, but we started to joke around and touch each other over the clothes in our private areas. I was only half joking of course ;) Him allowing me to "jokingly" grab his buttocks, or fondle his penis or play with his upper body over the clothes, was one of the best times I had experienced as a teen. But it stirred up more longings and passions for boys in my life.
We got our high school friends to act in the same manner and it was making me go crazy inside. Especially when I met all of his friends in his grade that thought we were nuts together but loved us. We inspired boys to act out on their inner most craziest urges and they didn't have a problem with us grabbing them as a joke. My sexual passions were at an all time peak by grade twelve and I didn't even care that I didn't have a girlfriend that much. But at the same time I spoke out against being gay, even in a class presentation I did in front of my English class.
There was even a girl who had looked up on the fact about being born into being gay and she had many insights to say on the opposing view of my topic. She works at one of the Saskatoon gay bars now. Some people agreed with me and some didn't. I really didn't want people to know that I was gay, so I figured if I spoke out against it, then people wouldn't think I was. As I look back now, I see that people who are so anti-gay to a major extreme, are usually just closeted people who don't want to be viewed as a perversion... sounds familiar!
I had more friends in Evan's class because of how crazy and open I was around him and it made the younger class feel more accepted. There were so many of them I was more attracted to than the guys in my class. Which made me decide to not go to my official after-grad party and invite some of these guys who I really liked in more ways than one. ;) At one point of my party we were in our underwear, running through a park and I gave a boy in red briefs a really nice smack on his buttocks. ;) I teased myself way too much in high school with all of this joking around which just lead to much much much more masturbation.
There was also the porn aspect of things. My grandparents handed us down their old computer and I watched a lot of porn and also went on web cam with boys in other parts of the world. Boys sent me private pictures and I was loving it! I would always ask myself, "why can't boys hit on me in Saskatoon like they do on the internet?" But many other boys were too scared to act on their desires as well. There was way too much homophobia in our school and I was missing out on all of the private teenage sexual encounters due to my offensive stance on being gay at the time.
I once gave into my sexual temptations however. I met a guy online and we went the Starbucks in the Midtown Plaza. We went to the movie "The Lady in the Water" and because I knew he was gay, I made my move. I put my arm around him and because the theater was nearly vacant, it eventually led to making out. We got to rubbing each other all over and playing with our "private areas". ;) We were both so into each other but it was purely lust. We went into the empty washroom and I was ready for "love". In a nutshell, no condom, no lube so it didn't work very well from behind. I asked him for oral but he obviously wasn't really into it after what we tried prior. So we went outside and were ready to go home... We didn't even finish the movie!
On the bus ride home, all I could think of was how dirty I felt and that it wasn't what I had expected. I messaged him on the internet and he was all smiley faces. I immediately told him that I wasn't ready and there was just a quick "ok". I thought that God surely didn't want me to be gay at all.
I was even more about religion and attended a really big Alliance church. Evan and I went to a number of different churches over the years and what sold me onto this one, was the youth retreat. I met many new friends and felt closer to God then ever. But religious distortion was still getting to me and I felt like I needed to clean up my sexuality. So I got a girlfriend who went to the church and we became best friends. We hung out lots but I was too afraid to make a move. I didn't have any natural urges to make any moves. I asked to kiss her once because that's what couples do but she said she wasn't ready and I just didn't know how to ask her again. After our dates I would go home and watch more gay porn later in the evening.
I also met a boy in the church who I really loved and had intense feelings for. He saw me as this cool guy and we were extremely close. Even closer than Evan and I ever were. When my girlfriend broke up with me, I was okay with it because I still had my new friend. He came over for many weekends and there were so many nights that I wanted to hop into bed with him and make a move. I didn't want to scare him off though. It was short lived however, when he got into the wrong crowd and into drugs. He stopped hanging out with me and it crushed my heart. It hurt way more than my breakup! I was beginning to realize that this longing I had for other men would never go away and I eventually despised God for doing this to me.
I stopped going to church, I moved out of my mom's and I finally "came out" to everyone in hope that I could make my passions into something good. Family and close friends I had met over the years were fine with it even though it was a very emotional experience for me. I still watched porn a lot but started to date other men online. However the internal battle due to sexuality and religion was still very much alive in my head. So I would often end my relationships quickly after the first kiss. I would wonder if I made the wrong choice but still grudging God for supposedly saying what I wanted most all of my life was an abomination.
I gave up on God and my life went from "out" and appearing "proud" to disastrous and suicidal all within a year. In my mid 20's, my religion was sex, drinking, masturbation and witchcraft. Love was no longer in my heart because that grudge against God turned more stale and more evil than ever before. I went to the gay bars, took guys home and had lots of sex. I was addicted to the sex, the touch of another man's flesh and the pleasure I felt when I was up against him. Pure lustful pleasure and God was nowhere to be seen in my life for a while.
Before I could end my life, Evan wanted to start going back to the Alliance church. I said "no way man" at first but then I really needed to ponder what I was doing with my life. I decided to go back when I realized that the last time I was happy, was when I was with the church. I hadn't been there since I was closeted though... The church was homophobic in a "loving" manner. "We love you but do not support what you do". I couldn't blame them at first. I was so promiscuous that it still felt like I didn't have God in my life even though I was going to church. I tried having less sex for the sake of being a better person while telling everyone it was all for God. It wasn't really, I was still questioning the whole God thing.
People from the church convinced me to go to a ministry group to bring me closer to God again. It was a class that I took once a week and it went back into your past. We spoke about who hurt us, who we hurt and how we can make things right with God again. I got the hint that they wanted me to change my "lifestyle" into something a little more celibate. Yeah right! I thought to myself. I was having sex far less than before and gave my life back to Christ but I would still have some fun lustful pleasure on occasion and continued to watch lots of porn.
I tried giving my life back to God a few times but was skeptical about it at first. Finally there was a point where I officially gave my life back to God and there was no turning back. I dismissed all skepticism and was ready for my life to get better. I was even considering walking away from being gay but soon after realized that would be too much of a life sentence for something wanted so much all of my life. There was way too much passion, longing and love in my heart to give it up and I felt it was God-given! A man who would love me for all that I am, who would make me feel like a gem and I could go crazy for with every expression of love. From the heart to the physical desires to the very center of my soul. After all, the bible does say:
1 Corinthians 7:8-9
But I say to the unmarried and to widows that it is good for them if they remain even as I. But if they do not have self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
So I could try to run away from my desires and be celibate, but in all reality I have way way way to strong of urges inside me. For the places in the world who do not allow same-sex marriage, make your own Holy ceremony for one another and stay committed! Because there's nothing worse than having no one making you accountable for all of these lustful desires inside of us. Replace them with a love and companionship where you can safely become something more than just desires but intense expressions of love.
I left the Alliance church due to all of the homophobia shortly after a young adults night that sparked interest in an Ecumenical GSD (Gender and Sexual Diversity) Christian support group. The topic of the evening was "homosexuality" and the pastor used the traditional verses used against gays at face value. But there was a question period (hand picked by the pastor). However many of my friends came to support me and even a pro-gay Anglican Youth Minister woman I met through Saskatoon's ACC (Avenue Community Center for Gender and Sexual Diversity). We spoke from our hearts and brought up things that some people never considered before.
The Anglican Youth Minister, Emily and I had a meeting at the ACC and shortly after started a group that is now know as Sanctuary Saskatoon. I met a lot of people in the GSD community and we have helped each other become stronger people immensely. I later became Co-Chair for the Saskatoon chapter Integrity, an Anglican gay rights group that meets monthly for Eucharist and discussion, which Emily is chaplain for. She was ordained into the Priesthood in 2013. I also sing in the Bridge City Chorus, a GSD friendly choir, as a bass singer.
As you can see, I'm pretty busy for God! Whether its a choir concert, a GSD-friendly Christian meeting or other special events in Saskatoon that I feel spiritually lead to be a part of. I'm there and ministering to gays in Saskatoon. But what about my addiction?
We live in a world where sexual images are just a click away and easy to get our hands on. The more I see the images, the more I want them and the more my mind slips into lustful desires. Sometimes I slip and I still mess around with other men. I sometimes come across the wrong place and the wrong time and my desires still burn for more. "But if they do not have self-control, let them marry; for it is better to marry than to burn with passion." I have faith that I will find my match in this life because right now my lustful passions still burn within me and they get so hot that I can't control myself.
I often say a prayer that God would send me an angel. I hope and pray this for the rest of my days but understand that people don't always get their soul mates for the rest of their lives, regardless of gender or sexual orientation. I'm still a sinner and I'm not better than any of you. However I think through my story you can see that I'm a lot like you and see that I want the same things in life that you do. Please help slay the demon called Homophobia and maybe we can help each other live less sinful lives.

Preaching and Harassment
For over three years I have been taking the same bus route to work every morning at 6:06 AM. I catch the 6 or 11 on Broadway between 11th and 12th Street East headed to the downtown bus terminal. for about 10 or 15 minutes I wait downtown for the 14 North Industrial and lately I have had to give my head a shake at what I have seen over the last little while during those minutes in between.
A man who also takes the 14 is often seen with the Holy Bible reading to himself or harassing other Saskatoon Transit customers who take the same bus as him. He'll start out with a polite hello and attempt to get to know you with an underlying agenda to "Save" other riders.
I find the general "Save" attempt to be a total crock of sh*t. When I see people attempt to do so, all I see are people using disrespectful tactics such as manipulation and brainwashing. This early morning preacher tries this attempt with an added extreme. He begins preaching to them but it's not only that... by the time he has begun, there is no stopping him unless you punch the guy in the face! Which I would never do but I wouldn't feel sorry for him if someone else did it. ;)
Thereafter, he just goes too far. When people ask him to leave them alone, he keeps on preaching in a disrespectful and harassing manner. So what does the Holy Bible say about this behaviour?
Proverbs 25:17 "Seldom set foot in your neighbor’s house – too much of you, and he will hate you."
I'm thinking that this would go for people's comfort zones as well. It's common sense that unwanted attention is harassment and makes people feel uncomfortable. Why must these preachers dismiss all common sense when it comes to sharing The Word? If people are not showing you interest in what your saying when you share about your faith, all that you are doing is pushing them further away from God. After you're done your rant, they will remember an associate it with all of Christianity.
This morning, this interesting fellow gave me a one of his lectures and I was all ears. He started out with a parabol and turned it into this big speech from when I was sitting down at the terminal to the point I got off of the bus. I had talked to him previous mornings and he knew that I was a Christian gay man and that I believed that people misinterpret the bible. This morning he tried to fill my head with lots of nonsense including that "the Bible is not open to interpretation".
Excuse me? You told me previously that you didn't know enough about certain subjects to add input and her you are telling me that you cannot interpret the Bible for yourself? Yes I know that there's an original message that lies within the history of the Bible but no one has the Bible down 100% in today's world.
I kept cool though and just listened because most times when I would see this fellow preaching to others, I would just put my headphones in a little louder. But I wanted to hear what he had to say for myself and in the end all that he was doing is repeating things he had already told me from the beginning of his lecture and adding little bits in between. He sounded like a broken record by the end. If you're going to preach to me show some intelligence and quit it with the stereo typical Sunday morning cliches.
He even went as far as bringing up the lusting after flesh aspect and I got the hint that he was referring to my sexuality. Well my sex drive is quite slowed down since my promiscuous clubbing days. And there's a difference between thinking about banging someone and acknowledging that you are attracted to them. This guy went on and on about the Bible mostly and how he believes that it's still perfect today. Impossible.. there are words in the original scripture that the English language does not have words for today. The word "homosexual" didn't even show up in the book until the late 1800's and before that the translations were extremely vague on the subject.
I stayed cool through his entire lecture to me and he never even stopped to ask me what I thought about all that he said. It proved to me that he's just another brainwashed, self-righteous moron who is to afraid too live according to his own God-given life and pertains to the fundamentalist cult way of Christianity. The term "God takes us further from ourselves" does not mean that we have to drop our entire identity! It means that He can steer us away from our sinful nature if we let Him and harassment I'd assume is unacceptable in God's eyes.
As I was leaving the bus, this fellow wishes me a happy Thanksgiving and I reply "Yea.. you too." As I walked from my departure bus stop to work, I said a prayer to God. "God, stop the manipulators, the brain-washers and the harassers from ruining possible relationships with You." A prayer for the preachers who I pity and a very serious prayer nonetheless.
This Thanksgiving, I am thankful to God for all that I have and that I am certain about all that I am. I didn't take in any of this cult preacher lectured me on. I am also thankful that I have a good head on my shoulders and that I am closer to God than ever and am certain of what he wants for me in life. For the things I don't know yet, it's coming and I trust in Him because the way I live my life now is all that has ever worked for me.
